If you get traffic . . . and then build a list . . . you want to find ways to extend the selling process beyond the initial touch.  Autoresponders do this brilliantly.  They follow on the heals of a purchase, download, subscription, etc. to build a rapport and sell a bit more.  In fact, interestingly enough, we're especially susceptible to buying another item from someone right after we've purchased one when that glow of excitement can spill into the next item.
